For me as an artist one of the most important things I can do to help myself do my best work regardless of where I am, is to be able to recreate my set-up anywhere. I know what works for me as far as how to set up my equipment and what I need. When working on-location I have to be able to produce this at least somewhat in order to do my job.
The most important element for me other than my makeup kit, of course, is lighting. I can do hair and makeup in the dark if I have to, I believe after so long we all get “muscle memory” with our application. However if I can’t see my work then how can I be sure it is its best? I always carry lights with me, they are part of my kit now.Second to lights is a seat or chair. I’m short and so need a chair that puts my talent in the best place for me to work on their faces and heads. I do best with a shorter chair. It is easy now to find portable chairs that even have little side-tables which is also important when on-location. Many artists like the Zucca bag which has a seat on top of it.
To make sure you have what you need ask yourself this: If you were on mountainside for work, what would you need to do your job?
Some additional tips: Make sure that whatever additional equipment you are carrying is done so in a way that is easy on your body. We have to protect our backs and upper body. Umbrellas are also great for you and your talent when shooting outdoors.
